What exactly does it mean to get Zucked? It’s what happens when organizations like Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook reduce your privacy little by little each day. Facebook, Google, 3-Letter government agencies, and other tech businesses actively harvest every shred of information about you from the Internet. These groups are arguably the worst privacy offenders in history. This form of surveillance exceeds that of Big Brother in George Orwell’s infamous novel 1984.
Zuck and friends know everything about you such as: your real name, family members, facial recognition, everywhere you’ve been, “likes”, political ideas, web searches, and even private messages.
When a social media or company site uses WIFI triangulation to find out where you are anywhere in the world, you get Zucked for good. Gone are the days of being tracked just by your approximate location. Now it’s within 6 feet of where you are. For you Terminator fans out there, an omnipotent technological force (Skynet) is very much a reality now.
Each time you upload a selfie to Facebook (or Zuckbook, as we like to call it), you send more information about yourself. All photos from digital cameras and phones contain metadata called EXIF. This reveals your location, your device type, the serial number of your phone and more.
Speaking of Zuckbook, both theirs and Google’s “privacy” policies are misleading. Everything posted on Facebook is permanent and can be easily leaked to the public. Platforms like Zuckbook practice data mining. This means that social media websites exploit your info for profit by selling it. It shouldn’t come as a surprise since it’s mentioned very explicitly in their End User License Agreement (EULA), but people continue to ignore it and let it happen.
Email, which everyone including politicians seem to trust, is easily read by your ISP, the government or anyone else connected to the network. It doesn’t take much effort for someone to know exactly what size bras and panties you purchased from Amazon (together with your full name and shipping address).
The Zucking doesn’t end there. Something called HTTPS spoofing allows hackers to intercept your data through supposedly encrypted networks. Aren’t we supposed to trust HTTPS? Therefore, other parties can read your banking information, private messages, see pictures, and more.
Chromebooks, which schools continue giving to kids, use the same technology that allows for WIFI triangulation to find your kids within 6 feet. Imagine what sort of creeps and criminals could take advantage of this technology.
The list of offenses goes on. From future camera-equipped, always-connected driverless cars monitoring your position, to the government’s HITEC Act monitoring all your medical data, to hackers remotely planting viruses in your devices, the Zucking never seems to end.
